our history

The Gipson Company is one of Atlanta’s leading commercial real estate developers with a focus on the development of Commercial, Medical, and Mixed Use properties. We are proud to deliver innovative and unique projects, all with a standard of excellence.

1970s
The Gipson Company was founded in 1973 by John H. Gipson, Sr. and started as an Atlanta based retail development company.

Originally partnered with Hal Lamb & Associates, together they developed their first retail shopping center called Park Aire Triangle anchored by Big Apple and Rite Aid.
1980s
During this time the Gipson Company developed the first five Walmart’s in Georgia and the first four Ingles, The Gipson Company continued throughout the 80’s to develop for Kmart, Ingles, Walmart, Kroger, Eckard’s and Walgreens.

The Gipson Company even had the unique opportunity to develop a Kmart anchored center in Tuscaloosa, AL. with Joe Namath as a partner.
1990s
With a growing portfolio of shopping centers The Gipson Company had become one of Kmart and Kroger’s leading developers in the Southeast and the footprint of development grew, reaching as far as Lafayette Indiana completing Lafayette Market Place in 1998. 

The 90’s was a period of significant growth including the company’s first hotel with Marriott in Roswell, GA.
2000s
During this period the company moved into more urban centers and completed the development of North Decatur Square, in Decatur, GA.  The company also developed their first urban mixed-use development in downtown Greenville, SC., along with their first development in South Florida outside of Miami. 

In late 2007 the Gipson Company started their largest development yet, a 200 acre master planned mixed use development in Mt. Juliet, TN. 
2010s
With the development world’s everchanging climate, the Gipson Company made the decision to move into developing Medical office buildings.

The Gipson Company’s first development was a three story 55,000 sq. ft. building anchored by Walgreens and Piedmont Hospital in the city of Brookhaven GA. in 2015.  This was followed by another 60,000 sq. ft. medical office adjacent to the first in 2018. 
2020s
This decade promises to be another transformative period in the Company’s history, and 2022 will be a milestone as the company adds the third generation to this almost 50 year old family business.  This time in our company’s history will add several new exciting projects. The first is 2021 Peachtree Medical a 70,000 sq.ft. medical building at 2021 Peachtree Road across from the Shephard Spinal Center and adjacent to the Piedmont campus.  The Company plans to start another 70,000 sq.ft. medical building adjacent to the Northside Hospital campus.
And in what will be the most exciting and impactful development we have ever done, The Gipson Company, in Partnership with Gray TV is developing Assembly Atlanta, a mixed-use project on the site of the old 135 acre GM manufacturing plant in Doraville, GA. 

Phase I of this development is under construction and will include 1,000,000 sq. ft. of studio, mill, office and warehouse space for use by Gray TV and NBCU for the production of major motion pictures, live tv, and streaming shows for both company’s digital platforms. In addition, Gray TV and the Gipson Company will be developing a mixed use live, work, play development on the remaining acreage comprising of retail, office, hotel, residential and an e-gaming/conference center.

Upon completion this will be a major driver of economic impact to not only Doraville, but Dekalb County and the State of Georgia as a whole.  
Construction start September 2021
Completion October 2023
